A Jazz Fantasy Comes to MLS Libraries During Spring Break

Jazz FantastWhen we think of fantasy, we think of something that is free-wheeling and that riffs on the rules and improvises readily.  What’s that if not jazz?

This year as part of its annual Spring Fling program for children, the Metropolitan Library System presents a series of jazz events called “Jazz Fantasy,” with Howard Hanger. The program begins on March 19 and lasts through March 23, the week of Spring Break, so children will be out of school and have time to experience this colorful and introduction to the world of jazz.  The individual events will occur at 12 library locations.

“Howard Hanger is a master entertainer and jazz musician,” said MLS Director of Outreach Services Dana Morrow, “who has toured all over the world.  His unique ability to relate his music to all people, from small children to senior citizens, is unparalleled.”

This accomplished musician has produced 12 award-winning albums.  The titles include “For Kids Only,” “For Kids Only II,” “Elementary Blues,” and “Dog Breath and Other Mind Boggling Hits for Kids.”

“Hanger’s recordings are beloved everywhere,” Morrow added. Concerts by Jazz Fantasy include a wide variety of jazz styles from blues to traditional standards to contemporary, as well as his famous children’s songs and music made popular by artists such as Dave Brubeck, Louis Armstrong and Chick Corea.

“Performances are complemented by unique storytelling and audience involvement,” Morrow said.  “Everyone should have a great time.”
