Sweet Biscuits Served Up At MLS Libraries

What is ”Sweet Biscuits”?

“Sweet Biscuits” is a presentation in word and song by Oklahoma City 's performance troupe Rhythmically Speaking that tells the story of the creation, development and evolution of black towns in Oklahoma . The program will be presented 13 times at MLS libraries during the month of February.

“Many Oklahomans don't realize,” said Dana Morrow, MLS Director of Outreach Services, “that this state had as many as 50 towns at one time that were founded by and for African-American citizens. Some of them were ex-slaves of the Five Civilized Tribes, known as ‘freedmen,' and some were ‘States Negroes,' ex-slaves from other states.”

Some of them came to Oklahoma by way of the Trail of Tears, and they traveled via horseback, wagon, train, waterways, and by foot. Some found themselves here by choice, others by force, but their strength and determination were clear.

“ Sweet Biscuits” follows an African American ex-slave family from the cotton fields of North Carolina to the red dirt plains of Oklahoma . Who and what did they leave behind? Why did they choose Oklahoma ? What did they bring with them? Was Oklahoma what they expected? What was daily life like for the early African-American settlers? Would they stay in Oklahoma ? If they left Oklahoma , why did they go? What is "happening" with these towns today and how do we remember those towns that no longer exist?

To find out the answers to these questions, you'll have to attend the show!
