Game On for Teens at Libraries This Summer

Whether their preference is for board games or video games, your neighborhood Metropolitan Library System library has something for teens this summer.

As part of the MLS annual Summer at the Library program for teens, “Make Waves at Your Library,”  libraries will be hosting Gamefest, with a variety of video games, and lessons in the ancient Chinese board game GO.  All sessions are free and designed for teens.

“In summers past we’ve offered Gamefest and other kinds of board games,” said MLS Young Adult Services Coordinator Emily Williams,” and they’re always turned out to be popular.  Teens find out how easy it is to meet people and make new friends when they link up with others to learn or play a game.

“Honestly, I think Gamefest has always been most popular because of the selection of video games we make available.  This year we’ll have Guitar Hero, Wii Sports, Super Smash Bros., Rock Band, DDR, and more.  All our games are rated E, E10+, and T.”

But for the more traditionally minded teen, this year the library has joined with the Oklahoma GO Players Organization to offer lessons in this 2,500-year old game of strategy.

“The rules are pretty simple,” Williams said, “and you can play an offensive or defensive game, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy.  Confucius wrote about GO, and he was a pretty smart guy.”
